According to Wikipedia, “tatami is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms.”
The surface of tatami is woven soft rush straw. Its fresh smell of straw, its soft/firm feeling… I like it so much that I spread 4 and a half tatami mats in my home office. On the tatami mat I’m sitting right now writing this blog, and on the tatami mat I enjoy practicing tea ceremony.
According to Wikipedia, “tatami are made in standard sizes,…”
So was my understanding, that tatami mats only come with standard sizes either square or rectangle, until I stumbled upon this YouTube video.
Wow! What a creative idea! Among many Japanese people, tatami mats became something outdated. Many new homes in Japan have only western-style hardwood floors or carpeted floors. With this tatami art, however, the tradition of enjoying the smell and the feel of the tatami might regain popularity!
