What Does This Symbol Mean

When I was in grade school (I admit it was half a century ago), we students had to memorize map symbols.  This symbol means a school, that one means a police station… It was sort of fun, but there was one symbol I wondered why I had to memorize.

Hint. See the photo above….Yes, mulberry field.

Mulberry.  The food for silkworms.  Once Japan boasted as the largest exporter of raw silk in the world.  Once the map of Japan was full of this symbol.  By the time I was in grade school, it mostly disappeared…

I’m encouraged to learn that there are people in Japan who are trying to grow mulberry field again, to grow silkworms, and to produce raw silk for kimono again in Japan.

My obi will be purely Japan made.  How exciting!
