What Was New at Senses from Japan – Fall 2017

For those of you who came to Senses from Japan event last weekend, thank you very much!

It was our fourth event holding at Fran’s Chocolates Georgetown store. Every  time we bring in what is called “Nagomi Dana”, a loose replication of a tea room.

While hosts and guests sit on the chair rather than sitting on their knees, the surface of Nagomi Dana is made of tatami mat.  You can place all the tea utensils exactly the same way as you would in a real tea room. There we present tea ceremony demonstrations in authentic way.

 

In addition to presenting tea ceremony demonstrations, each time we have tried something different.  In the spring we had Ikebana demonstrations. This time we tried Make Your Own Matcha time.

We placed a kettle full of hot water in the center of the table. Around the kettle we put four settings of tea bowls and bamboo whisks, so that four people can be seated at the same time.  Two people were to share a tea container, a tea scoop, and a ladle.

At Make Your Own Matcha time, we didn’t go through all the detailed procedure of the ceremony. Rather, people experienced the very basics of tea making such as pouring water with the ladle, scooping matcha powder, and whisking tea.  Of course, also enjoying Fran’s white chocolate truffles!
